Portable Appliance Testing - PAT Testing

Why Test Portable Appliances?

Increasingly the insurance industry is requiring that PAT Testing is carried out prior to the renewal of an insurance policy.  This is because over 1,000 work place accidents involving electric shock are reported to The Health & Safety Executive each year, many of which are fatal!  Most of the reported accidents involve portable appliances.

The Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers and self employed persons to take reasonable practical steps to ensure no danger results from the use of any electrical appliances.  This requires the introduction of a systematic and regular programmed schedule of maintenance, inspection and testing.  The Safety at Work Act places such an obligation in the following conditions:-
  • Where appliances are used by employees
  • Where the public may use appliances in establishments such as hospitals, schools, hotels, shops, etc.
  • Where appliances are supplied or hired.
  • Where appliances are repaired or serviced.
The level of inspection and testing required is dependant upon the risk of the appliance becoming faulty, which is dependant upon the type of appliance and the environment in which it is used.  PAT Testing forms an important part of the Safety at Work Act (1974).

Our PAT Policies

The detail of an appropriate Test Policy will be agreed with the client consistent with the Code of Practice recommendations.

All work will comply with current IEE Regulations, Health & Safety standards, & The Electricity at Work Act, so the Company's insurance will cover any incurred liability.  The test is inclusive of minor repairs and retests and includes the following.
  • Any necessary termination of cables
  • Any necessary replacement of standard plug tops
  • Any necessary replacement of fuses
  • Our standard Needs Testing Pass/Fail Labels
Each item is given a unique item number for identification.
  • A record in respect of each item inspected and tested, that includes company name, location, description, test result and next test due date.
  • A full copy of the report on paper based text log book & a copy of the test results on CD.
  • A PAT Testing Certificate (Electrical Safety Certificate) for your records and insurance purposes.
Provision for Socket Testing

We can if required check a customer's socket outlets, especially their earthing integrity, whilst testing the appliances. Performing these two tasks concurrently is worthwhile and is very cost-effective.  See our Testing Packages.

Our modern computerised testers are capable of testing all equipment, from computers to industrial machines.
